Hachioji Coffee
Born in Hachioji, scaling up in Nasu — a coffee-tree owner programme
We have been growing coffee trees in the mild climate of Hachioji, Tokyo. We are now moving our main cultivation base to Nasu and expanding. Through the owner programme, participants experience growing, harvesting and roasting their own coffee — an effort to grow and spread domestic Japanese coffee.
About the owner programme
The owner programme runs on CAMPFIRE Community. When you join, we look after your own coffee tree and you experience its growth, the harvest and the roasting together with us. We grow mainly Arabica coffee. We are also trialling the Typica variety and, if it goes well, plan to propagate it by cuttings. We grow other crops too, such as vanilla, banana and almond.

Plans (monthly)
You join as an owner member through CAMPFIRE Community. There is no limit on the number of trees (though the land can hold roughly 1,200 trees at most).
- Starter plan (first-year seedling): ¥1,000 / month
- Third-year tree: ¥5,000 / month
- Fifth-year tree: ¥10,000 / month
- No limit on the number of trees (land capacity about 1,200)
Our base — from Hachioji to Nasu
We started in Hachioji, but because of the difficulty of securing land and obtaining the necessary certifications, we are moving our main cultivation base to Nasu. In Nasu we have acquired roughly 20 ares of farmland and 20 ares of woodland, and are expanding our coffee growing there. We will keep the Hachioji field and use it mainly for events such as harvest experiences. The coffee trees have moved to Nasu, where we will keep scaling up.
Why coffee
Because of climate change, the land suitable for growing coffee — the "coffee belt" — is expected to shrink sharply by 2050. Coffee that relies on imports is likely to become harder to obtain and more expensive. We want to grow domestic Japanese coffee and spread it nationwide, ultimately aiming for a future where domestic demand can be met by domestic production. We are preparing for that future, one small local step at a time.
